The Hexagon-Make 2:

  • Chain 4, then join in the furthest chain from the hook to create a ring. If you prefer you can use the magic ring to begin instead.
  • Round 1: Chain 3, then 2 dc into the center of the ring. Chain 2. *Then (3 dc, ch 2) five times into the center of the ring. Join to close the round in the third chain up with a slip stitch.
  • Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as a dc). *Next, work a dc into each stitch across. Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into the corner space (ch 2 space from the previous round). Repeat from * around, then join to close the round in the third chain up with a slip stitch.
  • Repeat round 2 until the hexagons are as large as you need them to be. I worked mine until they were both 26 inches across at their widest points. I worked 15 rounds total (14 rounds of working two rounds per color, then one more round of a color to give it the appearance of having a finished edging).
  • Note: when your hexagons are complete, they will look very “wavy” and not lie flat. This is a good thing and what we want! See pic below:

Finishing & Assembly:

Begin by folding each hexagon in half so that they make an “L” shape, to get each one ready for seaming. Finally, lay each folded hexagon side by side so that they look like the diagram below:

Once positioned as shown, open up the front and seam down the inside center with a whip stitch:

Next, turn the sweater sleeves inside out and seam where indicated in the photo. Additionally, you may find stitch markers work well to hold everything in place as you seam everything together.  Sew the tops of the shoulders from neck to wrist all along the top on each side.  As you work, be sure to leave the front open for the cardigan, otherwise you’ll have a pullover!

Finally, weave in any ends that remain and it is ready to wear!  You can see all of the seaming and weaving in action in the video too!
